Marathahalli suits people who want to be inside the Outer Ring Road tech cluster and accept a busy, commercial neighbourhood in return. Whitefield suits people who want a more self contained, quieter area and are willing to commute east. Bellandur suits people who want new high rise living and can tolerate the worst traffic of the three.
All three are recommended constantly to anyone moving to East Bangalore for work, usually by someone who lives in one of them. They are not interchangeable. What follows is the comparison on the things you will actually notice.
Marathahalli
Marathahalli sits at the western end of the ORR tech corridor, a few kilometres from DivyaSree Technopolis, Prestige Tech Park, Embassy Tech Village and Bagmane Constellation, with Whitefield about ten to twelve kilometres further east.
Its defining quality is being inside the cluster rather than commuting into it. If your office is anywhere along the ORR stretch between Marathahalli and Bellandur, you are looking at a short journey rather than a daily expedition.
The trade is that Marathahalli is genuinely busy. The main road and the junction are among the more congested points in East Bangalore, and the area is commercial in character rather than residential calm. What softens this considerably is that the internal layouts a few streets back from the main road are much quieter than the main road itself, which is a distinction most people only discover after moving in.
Suits: anyone working along the ORR who wants the shortest realistic commute, and who will live a few streets off the main road rather than on it.
Whitefield
Whitefield is the oldest of Bangalore's IT hubs and functions almost as its own town. It has its own malls, hospitals, schools, restaurants and a large residential base, which means you can live your whole life inside it without touching the rest of the city.
It is also the best served of the three by metro, with the Purple Line running to Whitefield, which gives you a genuine alternative to the road on days when the road is unusable.
The cost of that self sufficiency is distance. If your office is in Whitefield or the EPIP area, this is comfortably the best choice on this list. If your office is at Bellandur or Kadubeesanahalli, you are commuting west along the ORR every morning with everyone else, which undoes much of the benefit.
Suits: people working in Whitefield or ITPB, people who want a settled neighbourhood with everything nearby, and families.
Bellandur
Bellandur sits south of Marathahalli along the ORR, close to RMZ Ecoworld, Global Technology Park and the Ecospace cluster. It has seen the most high rise apartment development of the three and attracts a young professional crowd accordingly.
If your office is at Ecoworld or Ecospace, you are effectively next door. The apartments tend to be newer than what is available in Marathahalli or Whitefield, with the amenities that come with recent construction.
The problem is traffic, and it is not a small one. The Bellandur and Ecospace stretch of the ORR is among the most congested in the city, and the junction bottlenecks in a way that turns short distances into long journeys. Living here means either working within walking distance or accepting that as a daily reality.
Suits: people working specifically at Ecoworld, Ecospace or Global Tech Park, and people who want newer apartment stock.

The question that actually decides it
Not which area is best, but where your office is and how you intend to travel.
Everything else follows from that. An area that is ideal for someone working at ITPB is a poor choice for someone at Kadubeesanahalli, even though both people would describe themselves as working in East Bangalore. Before comparing rents or amenities, pin down your specific office location and work outwards from there.
The second question worth asking, which almost nobody does in advance, is how far off the main road you want to be. In all three areas the difference between a main road address and one three streets back is substantial in noise and sleep quality, and marginal in commute time. That is one of the better trades available in Bangalore and it costs nothing to ask about.
